In Memoriam: Peggy Sue McCormick Johnston (1942-2024)

Peggy Sue McCormick Johnston passed from this life on April 1, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on January 15, 1942, in Mercedes, Texas to Albert Leroy and Muyrel (Holt) Truitt. Peggy grew up and attended school in Weslaco, Texas. Soon after high school, Peggy started LVN and RN training in El Paso. She married Preston McCormick in 1963 and was honored with 35 years of marriage, and also expanded her nursing education by attending CRNA school in Ft. Worth. Later, Peggy was blessed to meet and marry Randall Johnston on November 12, 1999.

She was a CRNA for 35 years, volunteering at the VA hospital on a regular basis. She was a State Hospital Chairman, a State Nursing Chairman, multiple times a Post and District President of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and one of the founders of The Pink Ladies at the VA hospital. During her free time, Peggy loved to play Skip-Bo with her family while always accusing her son of cheating. She liked to sit back with a good book, to quilt and crotchet, along with traveling and gardening.

Peggy is preceded in death by her grandson, Michael Preston; granddaughter, Megan Frances; parents, Albert and Muyrel Truitt; brother, Cecil Truitt; sisters, Vera Halbeck and Shirley Jean Thomas.

She is survived by her husband of 24 years, Randall Johnston; daughters Deborah Hagen and husband Troy, Lynda Filline and husband Chris; son Steve McCormick and wife Bethany, stepson Randall Johnston II; stepdaughter Jennifer Thomas and husband Jon; 15 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; sister, Billie Courtemanche; niece, Rae Nell Halbeck; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Pallbearers were be grandsons Patrick Filline and Riley Filline and District 30 Honor guard members.
