Patricia Allen Harper, CRNA, of Southfield, Michigan, passed away on November 14, 2023. The following obituary was contributed by Ronald Manningham, CRNA:
Summarizing someone’s profound impact on your life in just a few paragraphs is akin to capturing the vastness of a breathtaking landscape in a single brushstroke. In reality, it is an almost impossible task because there are so many aspects of Patricia’s life that are just absolutely amazing. It requires the distillation of a lifetime into the essence of a fleeting moment—a challenge that echoes the complexity of Patricia Harper’s remarkable journey.
Patricia’s life was a tapestry woven with threads of compassion, steadfast dedication, and extraordinary accomplishments that touched countless lives and profoundly enriched the medical community she served with unwavering devotion.
Born on August 27, 1949, in Chicago, to the loving parents Greta and Turner Allen, Patricia’s journey was marked by compassion and remarkable achievements. Graduating with honors from North Chicago Community High School in 1968, she continued her educational odyssey, achieving a BSN with honors from Northern Michigan University in 1972.
In the corridors of Northern Michigan University, Patricia not only gained knowledge but discovered love. Norman Richard Harper, also a student at Northern Michigan University became not only her life partner but the cherished father of their son Ricky Jr., who was born in 1983. Ricky Jr., is more than a beloved son; he is the embodiment of Norman and Patricia’s enduring love and unwavering commitment to family. Ricky Jr’s support during Patricia’s battle with cancer reflects the deep bond they shared. In him, Patricia saw not just a son but a source of joy and inspiration.
Patricia’s dedication to healthcare soon led her to the University of Detroit/Mount Carmel program in Nurse Anesthesia, where in 1976 she earned her anesthesia degree and certification.
Joining Henry Ford Hospital on October 10, 1977, Patricia became a trailblazer as one of the few African American nurse anesthetists in the United States. Throughout her 40-plus-year anesthesia career, she tenderly attended to thousands of patients, many of whom were critically ill. Her tenure in the anesthesia profession wasn’t merely a career; it evolved into a personal mission. Patricia transformed her role, dedicating herself to compassionate care for the underserved in her community.
Patricia was earnestly respected by her peers, she garnered recognition in the anesthesia community as one of the most exceptional practitioners in southeast Michigan.
A pioneer in championing diversity and equality, she left an indelible mark at Henry Ford Hospital, affectionately referring to it as the “The United Nations of Healthcare.” Her legacy is interwoven into the very fabric of Henry Ford hospital, benefiting countless medical professionals and patients alike.
For 19 years, Patricia served as a didactic instructor at the University of Detroit Mercy, contributing significantly to the education and growth of future anesthesia professionals. Additionally, with over 40 years as a clinical anesthesia instructor, Patricia generously shared her expertise with numerous RRNAs, leaving an enduring impact on the field. There is a part of Patricia in the hundreds and hundreds of professionals she trained, who now carry forward her legacy. As a preceptor, counselor, arbitrator, and nurturing figure, she touched the lives of many.
Patricia exemplified a rare virtue—seeing each individual through the lens of their humanity, not their race or religion. She treated everyone equally, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts she encountered. Her respect for both the young and the old was a testament to her boundless compassion, creating an atmosphere of understanding and unity.
In 2003, Patricia was honored with the “Guiding Light Award” being recognized as the University of Detroit-Mercy’s Instructor of the Year. Her exceptional service was further celebrated with the prestigious “Power of One Award” presented by none other than Henry Ford Health System CEO Wright Lassiter and Vice President Bob Riney in 2018. This highly coveted award is presented to only a handful of the most exceptional personnel of Henry Ford Health System’s 38,000 employees.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Patricia’s warmth, wisdom, and kindness touched lives as a mother, mentor, and friend. She created ripples of compassion that resonated with everyone fortunate enough to know her. Every facet of her life reverberated with her unwavering faith in Christ which she shared with those whose hearts would listen.
In the tapestry of life, there are those whose threads illuminate the path for others, and Patricia Harper was undeniably one of these luminaries. Her incredible journey, shaped by grace, empathy, and an unwavering commitment to equality, touched the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Even in the face of her battle with cancer, Patricia’s selflessness continued to shine. Her initial concern was not for herself but for the well-being of those around her. In the midst of her own challenges, she found strength to inquire about the welfare of those who greeted her, embodying a spirit of genuine care and empathy.
Over her remarkable 40-plus-year career at Henry Ford Hospital, Patricia’s impact extended far beyond medical corridors. She became a beacon of support, extending financial assistance and unwavering emotional backing to countless individuals and their families. Her legacy is woven into the stories of those she touched, a testament to her dedication to uplifting others in their times of need.
