January 2, 2025 The American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (AANA) is proud to congratulate George “Sandy” Weathers, MNA, CRNA, for his recent recognition by the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) through an award named in his honor, recognizing his exceptional contributions and dedication to the field of nurse anesthesia. The “George ‘Sandy’ Weathers SOAR Award” was presented for the first time during the 2024 USM School of Leadership and Advanced Nursing Practice Awards and Recognition Ceremony. This award will be presented annually to a student who has demonstrated an exceptional sense of responsibility, compassion, and an unmatched commitment to their peers, patients, community, and the nurse anesthesia profession. This award celebrates Weathers’s own dedication to advancing the nurse anesthesia field. A member of AANA since 2016, Weathers is currently serving as president-elect for the Mississippi Association of Nurse Anesthetists and has previously served two terms as president and multiple terms on the board. In addition, as Chief Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) at Greenwood Leflore Hospital, Weathers established the facility as a clinical training site for numerous nurse anesthesia educational programs, mentoring and shaping the education of hundreds of students.
