AANA Announces New Rm8 Innovation Lab Partnership with MedServe

April 2, 2025

The American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (AANA) is pleased to announce MedServe as a Rm8 Innovation Lab partner. Through Rm8, healthcare startups are able to transform ideas into scalable and profitable solutions that advance healthcare and patient outcomes.

MedServe is transforming narcotic management at the point of care — Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs), patient bedside, and outpatient clinics. MedServe’s end-to-end technology solution is used for securely storing and tracking narcotics in healthcare facilities, preventing drug diversion, protecting patient safety and ensuring compliance with DEA and state regulations around the use of controlled substances. The system offers a flexible solution with a compact design, and modular and scalable storage options to fit any facility size or budget.

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs), also known as nurse anesthesiologists or nurse anesthetists, are often the primary anesthesia providers in ASCs around the country, especially in rural areas. They play an essential role in administering anesthesia services, and they also work with narcotics on a regular basis.

“MedServe provides our members with a revolutionary system of digital narcotic management for ASCs across America,” said AANA Chief Innovation Officer Eric O’Connor. “It replaces paper compliance logs, misplaced keys, and manual processes, which are still used in about 90% of outpatient healthcare facilities.”

“We’re thrilled to collaborate with AANA as part of Rm8 Innovation Lab,” said MedServe CEO Alex Yampolsky, PharmD, MBA. “This partnership is a strategic leap in our mission to combat drug diversion and enhance patient safety. Not only does this collaboration give MedServe exposure to AANA’s extensive network of CRNAs, but their team’s expertise will also help us build a better product — one designed by end-users who have patient safety at the forefront, not just engineers. Together, we’re empowering healthcare facilities to provide safer, more efficient care.”

Rm8 (pronounced “Room 8”)’s unique programs and initiatives aim to revolutionize the way healthcare startups are nurtured, supported, and connected with the broader community. Rm8, with a focus on collaboration with the nurse anesthesiologist community, provides a supportive environment for members and teams to incubate product and service ideas or facilitate growth in emerging startups.

As advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) specializing in anesthesia care, CRNAs/nurse anesthesiologists safely administer more than 50 million anesthetics annually in the U.S. across various settings, including hospital surgical suites, dental offices, podiatry clinics, ophthalmology centers, plastic surgery offices, and pain management specialists. CRNAs also provide anesthesia in the U.S. military, Public Health Services, and Department of Veterans Affairs healthcare facilities. They represent more than 80% of anesthesia providers in rural counties, where many rural hospitals depend on CRNAs for anesthesia care.
