2023 Agatha Hodgins Award for Outstanding Accomplishment

Janice J. Izlar, DNAP, CRNA, FAANA

The Agatha Hodgins Award for Outstanding Accomplishment was established in 1975 to recognize individuals whose foremost dedication to excellence has furthered the art and science of nurse anesthesia.

The award was established to honor Agatha Hodgins (1877-1945), founder and first president of the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology. A notable pioneer in the field of anesthesiology, Miss Hodgins was one of the first to perfect the nitrous oxide-oxygen technique of anesthesia. In 1915 she founded the influential Lakeside School of Anesthesia in Cleveland and was the visionary force in the establishment of the profession of nurse anesthetists.

Janice’s achievements in the national and regional arenas have been exemplary. According to her nomination, she has dedicated her life work to furthering nurse anesthesia practice through strong service and leadership.

After serving as president of the Georgia Association of Nurse Anesthetists and as 2013 AANA President, Janice was appointed by Georgia’s Governor Nathan Deal to serve on the Georgia Board of Nursing. There Janice worked tirelessly for three years as President, advocating to advance nursing practice and education for all nursing professionals.

While serving on the Georgia Board of Nursing, Janice also built strategic connections with fellow board members of the American Association for the Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities. Through her work with the AAAASF Board, standards were revised to allow full practice for CRNAs in ASCs.

For vision, steadfast leadership, and tireless dedication to the nurse anesthesiology profession, the AANA members and Board of Directors are honored to present you with the 2023 Agatha Hodgins Award.
