Honorary Membership recognizes and pays tribute to an individual’s commitment to the profession of nurse anesthesia and the AANA. The first honorary membership was awarded in 1933 to Agatha Hodgins. At the time, honorary membership was only for nurse anesthetists and meant a lifetime waiver of dues. In 1975, the AANA began conferring honorary membership to individuals who are not CRNAs/nurse anesthesiologists. To date, this award has been conferred upon fewer than 25 individuals.
