The International Federation of Nurse Anesthetists (IFNA) was founded in 1989 with 11 charter country members, including the AANA in the United States. IFNA is incorporated in Switzerland and has grown to 46 member countries.
IFNA’s work centers on advocacy, title protection, education, and scope of practice.
Internationally, nurse anesthesia has been recognized and defined as an advanced practice nursing role. Nurse anesthetists work in all six of the World Health Organization’s defined geographic regions.
IFNA is a co-host for the World Congress of Nurse Anesthetists (WCNA). This congress is currently held every 4 years. The WCNA 2026 Congress is being held May 7th-9th in Brisbane, Australia. For more information, and to register, visit the WCNA 2026 website at https://wcna2026.com.
