Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Initiative Grant Overview

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are a priority of the Foundation. The Foundation solicits innovative and impactful proposals that further the goals of fostering DEI values within the anesthesia community. DEI educational development and research are within the purview of the Foundation’s Mission, DEI Values, and DEI Vision statements.

AANA Foundation Mission – To advance the science of anesthesia through education and research. As the philanthropic arm of the AANA, the Foundation raises funds and invests in projects that directly support the nurse anesthesia profession.

DEI Values – The AANA Foundation is an organization focused on research and education. As such, the AANA Foundation values the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of our work while excluding and rejecting bias. Addressing bias and inequities for CRNAs/nurse anesthesiologists, RRNAs, and our patients is critical for improved health and wellness for all.

DEI Vision – The AANA Foundation envisions a continuous integration of diversity, equity and inclusion throughout its nurse anesthesia education and research programs. The Foundation will create opportunity for all through scholarships, leadership, research, professional development, and philanthropic efforts with the intention to expand knowledge and understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion within the nurse anesthesia community.

The DEI Grant application is open to CRNAs/nurse anesthesiologists and RRNAs. The purpose of the AANA Foundation DEI Grant is to support education efforts and increase diversity within the nurse anesthesia profession with innovation and creativity. (CRNAs/Nurse anesthesiologists only, if your DEI effort is a research project, please apply using the general grant application.) The grant includes one or more of these opportunities:

• Programs that foster the development of future nurse anesthetists
• Workshops
• Lectures
• Workplace Education (CRNA/nurse anesthesiologist and/or RRNA)
• Webinar / Online Learning Modules

Examples of Purposes

• Funding for educational programs and/or opportunities for individuals who are interested in applying to a nurse anesthesia program
• Full day or two-hour worksite education on DEI efforts or opportunities.
• Education on DEI.
• Lecture at AANA, state, or other non-AANA meetings to build awareness and share resources for support.

Examples of Funding

Request for funding costs include detailed efforts including rationale for speakers. Meals, hotel, and airfare must be in accordance with the AANA Foundation’s travel policy.

• Tuition to attend and/or participate in a DEI effort
• Workshops or training
• Audio/visual costs to produce educational video
• Maximum Award: $25,000 (one time grant per initiative)
